Apple unveils new MacBooks, AirPods and $5 music streaming
Apple launched two new MacBook Pro models powered by new internal Apple Silicon chips , a new generation of AirPods wireless earbuds and a $5/month music subscription service.
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops are powered by the new chips. The models have eliminated the "Touch Bar" that worried Apple fans and restored several connectors — including the company's own " MagSafe " power connector — that had disappeared in recent years, angering some of the company's users.
Apple said the 14-inch model will start at $1,999, and the 16-inch model will start at $2,499. Apple said both devices will begin shipping next week.
Two new chipsets from Apple called M1 Pro and M1 Max . The chips are supposed to have better performance than the company's previous M1 chips, but they do so while using less power than competing chips from companies like Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.
The M1 Max chip uses up to 100 watts less power than other high-end laptop chipsets , which translates to better battery life, said Johnny Srouji, Apple's chief chipset .
"It's the most powerful chip we've ever made," Al-Srouji said of the M1 Max .
Before Monday, Apple's most powerful laptops were based on chips from Intel. The company has already put its first-generation in-house M1 chip in some MacBooks as well as its Mac Mini and iMac desktops .
Meanwhile, Apple said during the launch event that Apple's new AirPods are sweat- and water-resistant for use in workouts and will feature some of the audio features previously found in the high- end AirPods Pro . Apple said the new AirPods will cost $179 and begin shipping next week.
Apple's new AirPods are available to order online in the US and more than 26 other countries and regions starting Monday. The headphones will be available in stores from October 26.
Additional devices like AirPods tend to be a big seller during the holiday shopping seasons and have become one of Apple's fastest growing categories, with the home and accessories segment growing 25% to $30.6 billion in Apple's 2020 fiscal year.
