What is the storage device with the example? What are the ten types?

Hello friends, welcome  back again   Today we will discuss  what  is a storage device ( what is a storage device ) and  give complete information about the  types  of storage devices.  If you  want to know or not about  primary memory and secondary memory,  these posts are for you.

A storage device is a part of a device connected to any computer or electronic device that stores data or information, in which many types of data such as programs, documents, images, video, audio, etc. can be stored. It acts as memory and  is also called  storage media  or  digital storage  .

It is used to store data  digitally  ,  and  this data  can be permanent  or  temporary  .  Whenever we need the data saved in it  , we can access it at any time with  the help of this storage device

So let us now see what is  the storage device  and its types (primary memory and secondary memory) which will be discussed in detail.

What is a storage device (what is a storage device)

A storage device  is a part of  computers that  is used to store, transfer, extract data files and exchange data for any data and application.  It works to keep any data or information permanently and temporarily.

There are many different types of storage devices and each has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages.  Known as the  storage device as  well as the  media storage or storage medium . For example - a standard computer has many other storage devices including RAM, ROM, hard disk, and cache.

Types of storage devices

There are two types of storage devices in a computer.

1)  Primary storage device
2)  Secondary storage device

Primary storage device

The primary storage device is used to hold data temporarily.  It is rather small in size.  Because it is on the inside of the computer.  These include  RAM  and  cache  memory  .  It is also called the main memory of the computer.  This memory stores the instructions, the operating system, and the data required to operate the computer.  Primary memory, also called temporary memory or cache.

There are two basic storage devices-

1)  RAM (Random Access Memory)
2)  ROM (Read Only Memory)

RAM (Random Access Memory)

It  performs both  read  and  write  operations  on memory   It stores data temporarily.  If the power goes out while accessing memory in the system, the data in this memory will be lost permanently, so RAM is volatile memory.  RAM is divided into the following types:

  • Dynamic random access memory (DRAM)
  • Static random access memory (SRAM)
  • rambus dynamic ram (RDRAM)

ROM (Read Only Memory)

ROM stores such information that it is  read  only memory  which makes it difficult to modify the data.  ROM is also a type of persistent storage, which means that even after a power failure, it stores information and does not allow data to be lost.  Here are the names of some of the following ROM types-

  • PROM (programmable ROM)
  • EPROM (Erasable and Programmable Read-Only Memory)
  • EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM)
  • EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM)

temporary memory

Cache memory is  a small-sized volatile computer memory that provides high-speed data access to the computer's microprocessors and stores frequently used computer programs, applications, and data. It is more expensive than RAM and disk memory.

It is used to reduce the average time it takes to access data from main memory.  It is much faster than the speed of main memory,  also called   CPU memory  because it is very close to the CPU chip.  Therefore, the CPU accesses the data stored in the cache faster.

Secondary storage devices

The secondary storage device has the ability to store the maximum amount of data and at the same time keep any data stored permanently.  This storage device is on the inside or outside of the computer.  There are such kinds of devices like  hard drives  ,  hard disk  and  USB flash  devices  etc.

Generally, secondary storage devices have the ability to store data from megabytes to petabytes.  These devices store almost all types of data, programs, and applications on a computer, including the operating system, device drivers, applications, and general user data.

Most secondary storage devices are used for a variety of tasks, such as backing up data for future or disaster recovery, storing long-term used data, or storing less-used junk data on an inexpensive storage device. the device.  Below are the names of some secondary storage devices-

  • SD cards
  • tape drives
  • DVD drives
  • CD drives
  • Blu-ray drives
  • Floppy disk
  • USB input
  • cloud storage
  • Solid State Drives (Solid State Drives)
  • hard drives (hard disk drives)

Example of secondary storage devices

hard disk drive

A hard disk drive is   non-volatile magnetic storage device  capable of storing large amounts of data.  This internal hard drive is the computer's main storage device.  It is found installed in almost all laptops and desktops.  It  stores  running system programs, software, and user   documents  , such as  images  ,  text  files  ,  videos  , and  audio  .

It is used to permanently  store  and  retrieve  data on a computer  , to be a portable backup and store.  Usually, these boards are attached to the motherboard on the inside of the computer.  In addition to the interior of the computer, it is also a removable external hard drive that connects the external hard drive to the device via a USB connection.

Floppy disk

Floppy disk is also known as FD for short. A floppy disk is a storage medium that uses   magnetic storage technology  to store data   The floppy disk lasted from the 1970s to the beginning of the 21st century, and at that time was a popular storage tool for computers.  Initially, floppy disks were 8 inches (203 mm) in size, but were later changed to 5-inch (133 mm) drives, and eventually the 3-inch (90 mm) version.

Solid-state disks

The full form of an SSD is a solid state drive. It is also a storage device technology for storing data such as hard disks.  This is the latest storage device technology used in a computer.  It is used in devices such as laptops, notebooks, and desktop computers instead of traditional drives.

SSD does not have any moving parts like HDD, so it has very low power consumption compared to HDD and provides better performance.  The long life of this storage device is much more than that of a hard drive.  The SSD  reads/writes  data at a very high speed  , which also makes the access time less due to its high speed.  These are more expensive storage devices than hard drives.

optical storage device

The complete CD and DVD format are versatile CD and DVD discs respectively. CD and DVD are the most common and popular optical storage media.  This disk is later used to extract or retrieve stored data.  Optical storage CDs and DVDs are used to store programs, backup files, and store music and videos.

It is a technology that  uses lasers and light  to read/write  data   A standard CD typically stores 700MB of data for 80 minutes, but DVDs are capable of storing much more data than CDs.  DVD discs come in a variety of storage capacities starting from 4.7 GB up to a maximum of 17.08 GB.

USB flash drive

It is a portable secondary storage device that connects to a computer via a USB port. Also known as a data stick, pen drive, kitchen drive, thumb drive, and USB flash drive.  It is the easiest way to transfer data from one computer to another computer to store large amounts of data.  Its storage capacity can range from 2GB to 1TB.

The USB flash drive has no moving parts, instead it has an integrated circuit in which an integrated memory stick is installed to store data.

cloud storage

Nowadays, storing data online and on cloud storage is becoming more and more popular because in this digital age people need to access their data information from more than one device from anywhere.

  • cloud storage
  • media network

paper storage

In the early days of computers, no technology for storing information was invented, so one had to rely on paper to store information.  Nowadays, paper storage is rarely used or found anywhere.

computer memory modules

The computer understands only machine language, since only 0 and 1 store data in a two-digit computer memory.  It is called Bits or Binary Digit with two digits.

The machine language of the computer is written in binary code and begins with 8 bits or 8 digits (eg - 10101001).  This set of 8 bits is called 1 byte.
