Tens of thousands of people are experiencing disruptions on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp

On the evening of Monday 4 October, thousands of users of the social network Facebook , as well as their Instagram and WhatsApp , complained about the failure of the service. Error messages started appearing on the Downdetector portal. Many users were unable to load social media sites, send messages, connect to the system or access the messenger.

The scale of the failure turns out to be global:  126,000 people wrote  about problems with Facebook's  work WhatsApp  - more than 35,000 users, and  Instagram  - about 100,000 users. We are talking only about those who reported failures on the Downdetector portal: in fact, the number of those who could not use the company's services is even higher.

The incident was later described as the largest in Facebook's 13-year history. The  company faced more protracted problems  in 2008: then its services were unavailable for 24 hours.

As   The New York Times journalist Ryan Mac discovered , the problem didn't just affect the listed sites. He noted that Facebook's internal tools and communication platforms, including Workplace, have stopped working.

The reason for the failure was a server problem

Facebook said on  Twitter  that they are aware of the problem. Representatives of the social network wrote: "We are working to return to normal as soon as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience."

The company has not yet determined the exact cause of the failure. However, some experts speculate that the problem may be caused by a glitch in the DNS servers used by Facebook.

TikTok and VKontakte users also had problems with the services

Soon after the news that Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram had stopped working , reports of problems with other services not owned by Mark Zuckerberg began to appear.

Several users  reported outages from Twitter, Google, and Amazon . But despite this information, Twitter representatives on the official account of the social network mocked the problems of competitors. "Hello everyone,"  they wrote  after Facebook services stopped working  In the comments to the post, many users joked that they did not know what to do with themselves while social networks were not working.  Other users have  complained about bug in TikTok. in addition to ,

Telegram set a record for user growth due to failure

During the outage, users who were left without their usual communication channels started switching to Telegram . According to the founder of the messenger Pavel Durov, Telegram experienced an unprecedented number of registrations : in one day, the messenger had 70 million new users.

The influx of users has temporarily slowed Telegram . “Today so many users have joined Telegram that the situation has become unstable.  The team is trying to keep everything in order.  Hold on!”   wrote the  representatives of the messenger.

However, the next day, October 5, Durov reported that the messenger's team had successfully dealt with the overload. The founder of the messenger said on  his blog: “I am proud that our team was able to handle the unprecedented growth because Telegram has continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users ”
